I've seen some wonderful gem-like shows recently that I highly recommend. At SMMOA: Beatrice Wood: career-woman drawings, paintings, vessels and objects; tantra songs: contemporary tantric paintings from rajasthan. The House That Sam Built: Sam Maloof and Art in the Pomona Valley 1945-1985 at the Huntington Library (that's a beautiful Karl Benjamin painting above a Maloof settee above, and some of Maloof's templates on the wall in bottom photo). more installation photos here); Cy Twombley Tribute at MOCA. Several shows are part of Pacific Standard Time, the Getty's initiative highlighting the post-World War II L.A. art scene.

my maternal grandparents emigrated from hungary to chicago. my grandfather, who had previously been an actor, realized he couldn't support a growing family (not speaking a work of english) in the US, so he became a self-taught designer of embroidery. eventually, they moved to los angeles where they opened their own small embroidery business in the bradbury building in downtown LA. zsiga, as my grandfather was known, collected books at any opportunity, mostly through salvation army drop-offs. i inherited a number of them including: "folk costumes, woven textiles and embroideries of rumania," where i found these gems...

one of the best parts of surtex was meeting new art pals and hanging with friends, i mean a seriously super talented and eclectic group: helen dardik, carolyn gavin, lisa congdon, jillian phillips, allison cole, suzy ultman, mike lowery & (my compadre in giggles) susy pilgrim waters (everyone at lrs put together a fabulous booth!). also saw katherine streeter, gina triplett & matt curtius, jill bliss and a host more. saw as much art in the city as i could fit in: alexander mcqueen (go!), sonia delaunay, frances alys. walked the high line many times (loved!). lots of wandering with pals esther smith and dikko faust. thanks to all who hosted me (inc. my brother and sister!)

so much happens all the time. my nephew visits, we take my aunt to lacma and see the wonderful collection of netsuke's (there are over 800 in the collection and they are rotated every 3 months), and just to visit the japanese pavilion there (by bruce goff) is a treat. also a gem of a show of artifacts from pacific island culture: ceremonial masks, paddles, head wear, etc. finished "visit from the goon squad" by jennifer egan (who just won a pulitzer for the book). read a choice little interview with her at days of yore. the past few weeks (months?) i've been designing lots of pattern/surface design work in anticipation of surtex. maybe more on that later. also continuing to paint, and work on exploratory little figurative pieces that involve collage. here's one i liked. it's called, that volcano thing.

yesterday it was 113+ degrees in los angeles (broke the all-time record) and all i could think about was being immersed in blue water, somewhere. today, my print blue water goes on sale at the working proof. you can read about the inspiration for blue water here.

the mission of the working proof is to promote art and social responsibility. a portion of the sale benefits american forests whose goal is to plant 100 million trees by 2020.

i miss dearada and noticed she is posting over at tumblr on occasion which is how i found brown paper bag which is chock full of delight...yesterday received my copy of illustrated three line novels with splendid pictures by joanna neborsky...who doesn't love a book about "death by absinthe, kerosene, and sneeze: french men and women meet ample varieties of doom in félix fénéon's nouvelles en trois lignes"? the text was originally published in the early 1900's.

sneak peeks of something marci and i are cooking up for the poketo/kitsune noir "los angeles, i'm yours" show happening saturday april 24 at space 15 twenty. involving found fabric and repurposed drawings and stitchery and such. (and of course, that's also the title of a song by the decemberists)

the latest issue (no. 5) of uppercase magazine just arrived! in it you can read a great interview with lilla rogers about licensing, illustration, about being an agent and illustrator, and more (lots of other fascinating articles too). order it here. nice cover, matte stephens!

i was lucky enough to find my way (was it ten years ago?) to lilla rogers studio. i have watched the studio change and grow and expand with new agents and staff, and i have always felt signing on to this agency was one of the best art/business decisions i ever made.

a bit late on this post as i was visiting the land of rain in olympia, washington.

the happy family card project is now available! conceived and produced by estibaliz hernandez of pintameldia. all proceeds to benefit doctors without borders. with eight artists contributing a lovely family set: thereza rowe, lotte andkilde, alexandra hedberg, lady desidia, aris moore, kimberly laurenti, esti, and me. in a delightfully designed package by jorge fernandez. this is certain to be a wonderful gift or family pastime...

issue 5 from that lovely pub uppercase is available here and now (sample pages above swiped from uppercase blog). It was fun to see bathers (a collab with marci boudreau) in the mix as part of a nice article on mrs. roger's neighborhood (love that title) which along with all the other content, i am looking forward to seeing! julia rothman's book-by-its-cover has been sneak-peeking excerpts from exquisite corpse (which i am delighted to be a part of). it's coming soon i hope. also coming soon from esti, the family game card project: pronto, espero que pronto...and lastly, (i think) noonie's masterpiece has it's very own page at chronicle books; and this recent nice review at great kids books, a place to go if you love children's books.

greetings and happy new year (if one can still say such a thing in mid-february)! i was invited by estibaliz hernandez to participate in a one-of-a-kind game. each of eight invited artists created our own family in a new twist on the traditional family card game. the cards will be offered for sale (when printing is complete) and all proceeds will benefit charity.

i'll be drawing during the 2 to 3pm shift at the monster drawing rally benefit for outpost for contemporary art this sunday november 8. over 100 wonderful artists draw for one hour with finished drawings sold on the hour for $75. all proceeds benefit outpost.
